Identity

Identity

“And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago.” Ephesians 1:13 NLT

As Christian men we are routinely encouraged to obviously identity with God as His sons.  Yet when we meet someone one of the first things we do is ask “what do you do?”  For as men so much of our worth is tied to what we do. As a result we either have a good sense of well-being or we don’t, as we assess ourselves on the competitive fields of life.

Some folks encourage us that “what we do” shouldn’t be tied to “who you are”.

I disagree.

I don’t want to separate my vocation and where I spend 50 hours a week from my identity. Instead I want to focus on being the same person, in Christ, across all I do. My identity at work, shouldn’t be different than at church, or anywhere else I go.

God blesses me with a vocation, and I’ve watched it evolve over many years and can clearly see the stepping stones and relationships He enabled my vocation, so I have no reason to separate my work from my identity.

Identity should flow from “being”.  The Holy Spirit in us enables that “being”.  As a man seeking to emulate Christ I choose to use four lenses to look at myself and the world around me. I am God’s son therefore I am a King with an area of influence entrusted to me.  I am a lover and want to bring compassion, joy and service into all areas of my life.

I am a teacher and want to influence others on acting upon what is right for their lives. I am a warrior and will train my mind, body and heart for the battles to come.

I don’t do these all well yet, in every scenario, but I choose to use the identity of King, Lover, Warrior and Teacher as my being.  It’s who God made us as His sons and it’s who I am when I put on a tie for a meeting in DC, and it’s who I am when I meet friends for dinner and a beer, it’s who I am when I unwind with a red wine with my wife, it’s who I am when I read to my grandson. It’s who I am when I go to the gym.

I am a King, Lover, Teacher and Warrior.

I see that same in some of you who rightfully say I am a pilot, I am a chef, I am an accountant, I am a policeman, I am a realtor. Be proud of that identity that God enabled you to “be” in.

You are a King as an accountant.  You are a Lover as a realtor. You are a teacher as a fast food cook.  You are a warrior as an elementary school teacher. Choose to “be” in your identity in Christ in all you do and are blessed with.

“And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago.”
