Flat Landers!!!

Flat Landers!!!

IN HIS OWN WORDS by David Annecharico (TJC board and counsel)

Let us imagine that we discovered an entire world, inhabited by people…..but that world was TWO-DIMENSIONAL…..Flat….like a piece of paper.

Two dimensional people and two dimensional dogs and two dimensional cars….a “FLAT LAND”

Let us imagine: That you agreed to give up your current body and be reborn FLAT……be reborn in FLAT LAND…..

No more being able to see above and around things. No more being able to look up or down. NO MORE being able to jump. Remember this is a two dimensional world and you agreed to be flat!

How would you describe yourself to the people of FLAT LAND????

What words would you use? It seems that they have no words to understand even the concept of UP or DOWN.

How would you convince them that you were, in fact, temporarily flat and that the REAL WORLD is three-dimensional?

You might BECOME three-dimensional and show them? That wouldn’t work. because If you became three dimensional, they would only see one slice of you.

You might try and explain yourself using metaphors….things they might understand…..

You might try to point out the concept of “up” and “down”….perhaps they can grasp it.

Maybe what you say is blasphemous to these “flat people” and they kill you such as what many peoples on earth have done whenever a new and dangerous idea is introduced by a stranger or strangers. Maybe their flat leaders follow you around, worried about the ideas you are spreading!!!

And then you’d say that the flat world was wrong and the real world was so much much more….and everything that they were told was important was wrong.!

You might begin saying: Behold Kingdom of Three Dimensional is all around us! It’s at hand!!! Can’t you see it???

How long do you think you’d last? —

This is an important metaphor regarding our topic today.

Jesus Christ “who, existing in the FORM of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the FORM of a servant, being made in human likeness.…” Phillipians 2:5-6

He was not “of” this world. John 18:36.

And…his world, his being — obviously very difficult to describe for any human but made somewhat understandable by using metaphors: a mustard seed….a treasure in a field….the yeast that leavens bread….

So: stop thinking of him as a guy.

He had approximately 30 years to grow up and explain to us where he had come from. To explain the REAL WORLD….to us….that there was more and where he had come from…..we would go there. In fact, that we could INTERFACE with that real world……that we were (what???) MADE to interface with that real world and conceived there as well.

Stop thinking of him as a mere person. We do that a lot. We have to change. You won’t be able to get out of this “Flat Land”……if you think of God as a white guy with a beard and a lightning bolt in a cloud….and his son being a man in sandals talking about something far away.

Which brings us to the topic of understanding how Jesus Christ explained HIMSELF.

John the Revelator, it appears, saw him but could only describe him as “”…and His feet were like unto burnt brass, His head and His hairs were white like wool, as white as snow;” [other translations: “burnished bronze”], as if they burned in a furnace…” Revelation 1:13-16.

We need more map makers!!! Who among you will wrestle with the word of God and help us all find our way home?

Here are your clues – remember that you read them with your “flat” eyes but they point to something nearly unfathomable:

“I am the bread of life” John 6: 35, 48

“I am the light of the world” John 8: 12, 9:5

“Before Abraham was, I am” John 8: 58

“I am the door” John 10:9

“I am the good shepherd” John 10:11

“I am the resurrection and the life” John 11:25

“I am the way, the truth, and the life” John 14:6

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.” John 15:1

A way? AND a truth? AND a life? — A “true vine”?

What does this mean, flat people?

You were meant to find out what all of this means……So get your map making tools out and use the word of God as your compass and key. Get your backpack on! We have some walking to do and it’s not going to be easy.

And — we should start by asking WHO and WHAT a “Christ” really is…..
