“But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” Luke 5:16 (NIV)

“One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles.” Luke 6:12-13 (NIV)

“He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, ‘Father if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.’ An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.” Luke 22:41-44 (NIV)

Jesus recognized the power of spending alone time with God. He stepped away from the distractions from the world to hear His Father’s voice. Jesus used isolation as a training ground to prepare to do His Father’s work. When Jesus needed to make a big decision, He spent the night alone with God so that He would have clarity in His choice. When facing betrayal, arrest and crucifixion, Jesus spent time alone with God, and an angel appeared and strengthened him.

If Jesus needed alone time with God to focus His mission, to lead Him in decisions and to strengthen Him in moments of distress, then I most certainly do. While the enemy likes to isolate us and distance us from God and a community of believers, being isolated WITH God helps us defeat our enemy. It allows us to draw closer to Him, it helps us hear His voice more clearly so that we can carry out the mission for which He has purposed us.

Today’s Training: Our society has so many distractions and so many other things which compete for our time. And we think we do not have time for God.The truth is that we do not make time for God. What in your schedule is more important than spending time with God? Cut out the distractions and spend time alone with God everyday. Give God uninterrupted time. Put down your cell phone and turn off the television. When you need strength, seek God for it. When you need to make a decision, spend time alone with God and seek His counsel. Truly be alone with God.
