Love – a fruit of the Holy Spirit
“The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” Galatians 5:19-25 NIV
Love – what an overused word in our society. We say we love chick-fil-a, a football team, our child or some prized book or possession. We use it as a tool to influence someone to give us what we want, or withhold it to try and hurt them.
What is Love? For Christians it is the ultimate expression of the relationship we have with our Father and Jesus. It is why you were created – God wants a love relationship with you. God Loves you and wants you to feel and intimately know that love, and begin to love him back.
To do this, most of us need to completely erase our comfortable images and ideas of God. What is God really like? Francis Chan in “Crazy Love” gives a simple start;
-He is Holy – He is absolutely set apart, distinct from everything, nothing compares to Him.
-He is Eternal – He has always been, He exists outside time. God is bigger than anything our time oriented minds can fathom.
-He is all Knowing – it is impossible to fool God. He has never had an ah-ha moment. God has made billions of stars, and every species on this planet. He knows every single thing about us.
-He is all powerful – everything was created by and for God. Everything you do is for God whether you know it or not..
-He is fair and just – God is the only Being who is good, and He hates sin.
And those are the things we can see; God can not be contained and there is an entire supernatural aspect of God, that we get a glimpse of in The Book of Revelation.
So imagine our God – who is Holy, Eternal, all knowing, all powerful, and is beyond all our understanding; saying He loves you and wants you to love Him. Evidence of that should be the primary product (fruit) of everything you do in your life. Wow what a place to just stop and begin to focus every part of your life – I am loved, and was created and intimately known by the creator of the universe. That changes everything and dramatically transforms every thing about me and what anyone sees of me, and you.
Today’s prayer; Dear Father thank you for loving me. Thank you for this incomprehensible relationship where your holiness, power, fairness and sharing is simply not containable by me today. Let me be literally bursting, unable to contain your love, and be seen in everything I think and do today. Let the fruit of your love impact every person I encounter today. With all my heart, soul, mind and being – thank you. I love you Father
