Authority to Judge
“He is the Rock, His work is perfect; for all His ways are judgment, a God of truth and without iniquity; just and right is He” Deut 32:4 (KJ21)
“I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.” John 5:30 (NASB)
Our God is the creator of the universe. As the originator of all things, only God can set the fixed standard for what is true. There is no one before God, that you can use to check on Him. There is no higher authority, to be able to say, “I don’t like your judgment God, I’m going to appeal it”.
We have standards in this world. For instance, GPS satellites are tuned to a global standard for time (otherwise the GPS system would not work). GPS therefore provides not only your precise location, but also the time. Before cell phones, many of us wore wristwatches. Someone could ask you the time; you may look at your watch and say 8:25. Your buddy may agree and say 8:25. However, there is a correct, universal standard for time in that place. If the standard says 8:31, you and your buddy are late for your 8:30 meeting.
Since God is the originator and is perfect, He, therefore, is the ultimate point of reference. He is the ultimate standard. It is by God’s standards by which Jesus will judge the world, and His judgment will be true and right. It won’t matter if your buddy happens to agree with you, if your momma agrees with you, or if you were brought up a certain way. What ultimately matters is what God says about the matter.
“If anyone hears My sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day.” John 12:47-48
Each of us will face God’s judgment someday, and at that time will have to accept His judgment, since His judgment is true and right. Yet while we breathe here on earth, we still have a choice. Therefore, choose this day whose path you will follow: one of your own making or the one designed in love, perfectly by the Creator of the universe?
