“Therefore take up the whole armor of God. That you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. … above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.” Ephesians 6:13,16 (NKJV)
Locking shields relates to keeping the battle to the outside of our locked shields and defending against allowing it to come inside of our locked shields. Since we do not war against flesh and blood, our battle is not with each other. Satan (enemy) wants to destroy lives – we lock shields to stand against these constant attacks.
A couple of years ago, I co-led a men’s group. We moved it from meeting in our church building to meeting at a local Irish pub thinking more guys would come if they could grab a bite to eat and something cold to drink. At that time I was wrestling with difficult things in my life. A friend was concerned and loved me enough to say, “I think you need to share this with the rest of the group”. I texted another friend (mentor, not part of the group) asking him to pray with me. Rather than just praying with me he asked me when and where the group met. He came to the meeting to show his love and support for me. Not judging, not commenting, just present. A spiritual show of support for a brother in a difficult time, one of his wingmen.
He was locking his shield with me as if to say, “I’ve got your back.” It gave me the confidence I needed to share what I was going through.
For an army to fight well, they must fight from unity. The Bible describes the enemy’s attacks and lies as “Flaming arrows”
Do you feel flaming arrows being shot at you? Is your own shield big enough to protect you from them all? It only takes one arrow to find and strike your weakest part. O that you would lock shields with your brothers and cover each other so during the attack you can laugh at the enemy.
Daily Battle Order: Who are you locking shields with? How many men are covering your back? First. Lock shields with Jesus because if He is for you who can be against you? Second, call your friends, those you’re going to lock shields with. Call them and ask them what flaming arrows are coming at them. Have the boldness to tell them what flaming arrows are coming at you!
Finally, lock shields with them and love them. Make sure they know you have their back, maybe discuss your battle plans with them over a cup of coffee.
“Be Bold and Very Courageous” . It will make for a great story!
