Control over the Supernatural

The Great Commission 16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:16-20

And suddenly [the demons] cried out saying, “What have we to do with you, Jesus, You Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?” Now a good way off from them there was a herd of many swine feeding. So the demons begged Him, saying, “If You cast us out, permit us to go away into the herd of swine.” And He said to them, “Go.” So when they had come out, they went into the herd of swine. And suddenly the whole herd of swine ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and perished in the water.

Matthew 8:29-32 NKJV

The authority of Christ is not only over men, not only over the natural world, but includes the supernatural. The story from Matthew 8 above tells us that even before most humans recognized Jesus as divine, the demons recognized Jesus instantly. They knew who He was, they knew that He had power over them, and their fear was thick. Jesus’ power over them was so complete they even needed to ask permission to enter a herd of pigs, an unclean animal that no Jew would even touch. It’s also fascinating and instructive that Jesus needed no prayers beseeching God to cast out the demons, no rituals or incantations, no magic spells or divination. He simply said, “Go.” and it was done.

Men, we serve the most high God. The MOST HIGH God! There is none above Him, and nothing can override His ultimate authority. We see this throughout scripture. The God we serve commands angels as his servants to deliver messages and combat demonic powers. (Daniel 10:10-21) We serve a God who Satan has to ask permission to tempt us. (Job 1:6-12) Our King Jesus cast out demons while on earth and gave that authority to his future disciples. (Mark 16:17)

So now we must ask ourselves, in the knowledge of Christ’s dominion over the supernatural, what is our place? When we live in Christ’s truth we can inspire the same fear in the demons we encounter. This is why the demonic forces attack us spiritually; to blind us from the truth that the kingdom is at war, and you were created for victory. Sleepers, awake! When we are empowered in the name of Christ we can cast out demons! Living in Christ’s truth comes with a cost. It requires discipline, sacrifice, death to self, and hatred of sin.

Look into the mirror today and ask yourself. Have I allowed sin to cast doubt on my standing with God? If I encountered evil, would I rebuke it? Or would I do nothing?
