And working together with Him, we also urge you not to receive the grace of God in vain— for He says,
“At a favorable time, I listened to you,
And on a day of salvation, I helped you.”
Behold, now is “a favorable time,” behold, now is “a day of salvation”— giving no reason for taking offense in anything, so that the ministry will not be discredited, but in everything commending ourselves as servants of God, in much endurance, in afflictions, in hardships, in difficulties, in beatings, in imprisonments, in mob attacks, in labors, in sleeplessness, in hunger, in purity, in knowledge, in patience, in kindness, in the Holy Spirit, in genuine love, in the word of truth, and in the power of God; by the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and the left…
2 Corinthians 6:1-7
As I meditate on what ‘favorable’ or ‘acceptable’ time may mean, incidents from my past materialize before me. Some are regrettable, others bring back great memories. I am sure I have missed acceptable times. Such as when I was in college or during my early years of employment. In my arrogance, I skipped classes or spoke ill of my boss. I missed those favorable opportunities because I was focused on my pleasures, pain, or inconveniences.
But now as a disciple of Jesus Christ, are there ‘days of salvation’ that I am missing? When I encounter ‘hardships’ and ‘difficulties’, am I recognizing the favorable opportunities in these moments? Am I choosing to listen to the Holy Spirit, to endure under false accusations or beatings?
Do I rain curses down on those who charge me falsely or do I look for that ‘acceptable time’, to instead rain down blessings? I must be intentional, prepared, to follow the Spirit’s command to ‘Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.’
If I am prepared to see the ‘acceptable’ time, I am sure to make better decisions and not bring disgrace to the Name of Jesus. I must choose to engage in my training each day, to develop my spiritual muscle memory, in order to engage in readiness. Are we prepared for sleeplessness and hunger? If I do not practice being ready for those ‘favorable’, ‘acceptable’ times…I will come up short.
