Advent: Peace

via TJC

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. ”Isaiah 9:6 (NASB)

Today we consider the second week of Advent and the lighting of the Peace candle. At this time of year it is quite easy to get caught up in busy-ness of the season, from end-year goals & performance appraisals at work, to decorating the tree and home, to buying/wrapping/shipping presents (and not forgetting anyone!), to preparing food and coordinating on travel plans, Phew. What’s on your list? For this author, today is my 3rd 10-hour work day this week. These tendencies to busy-ness are a distraction from God’s intent.

Jesus came to be the Prince of Peace. Here peace is the Hebrew word shalom which means completeness or well being. Jesus did not come to end conflict but to bring us spiritual peace. With His coming we can have His presence, which begins with a right relationship with God and continues to fill us as we focus on His strength and trust Him.

Easy to say but easy to forget: Jesus is the reason for this season!

Daily Battle Order:

Right now, set ALL your distractions aside, and take a deep breath. Take the next few moments to focus on the lighting of the Peace candle and the coming of the babe, the coming Prince of Shalom, lying in the manger. What does this focus mean to you? Write it down to remember.

Throughout today, as distractions swirl around, work to keep His peace centered in your heart. Not easy, but as a warrior and overcomer, you can remember why Jesus is the true reason for this season.

Thank you for that deep breath, author! I focused on that babe in a manger, and then thought of how close He is to me. He's near me at all times, forever & forever. Thank you for every blessing, God!
