But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23
This week we begin talking about the first four Fruits of the Spirit that Paul speaks about in Galatians. The Fruits differ from the Gifts of the Spirit since the Gifts are external mechanisms that the Spirit can use to display and increase the Christian faith and the Fruits are the internal changes and holy alignments that we cultivate in our lives due to the instruction and embracing of the Holy Spirit. Through the Fruits we can embody God’s Love in any situation.
I am drawn to the internal component of the fruits and how I can see that the are the pillars of my ability to interact with the people around me. Forbearance allow me to overlook discomfort or unfairness and lift up others and make their day better. Love allows me to act without animosity or bias. Being at peace with myself leaves my heart available to connect with others and true joy and happiness is energizing to everyone who encounters it.
Lately, I have been speaking to my boys often about cleaning up after themselves and how cleaning cultivates these fruits. When we clean, we do not point fingers at the last person to play with something, we split the job up, bearing with one another. We show our love for our space and each other by organizing and removing things from the walkways which brings peace and then we grow in joy from accomplishing our goal. I want to teach them that not only is the action is important, but their demeanor and intention is as well.

Recall about the first four fruits and think of how well you cultivated them in the past week. Are they all growing and thriving or do some have dry cracked leaves from neglect? This week try to enter into each situation with the fruits in mind so you can respond well to your challenges.
