Joseph’s Calling

“Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became

furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that

region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had

ascertained from the wise men.”

Matthew 2:16 ESV

I was ready to write something entirely different when I stumbled upon a passage that

stopped me in my tracks. I had to sit back, overwhelmed by the evil it described. Mary

and Joseph, it seemed, could never catch a break. Just when they thought they might

have a moment of peace, a terrifying message arrived: King Herod was coming for their

child, determined to destroy Him.

Exhausted from the long journey, Mary was still weak from childbirth. They hadn’t even

had a chance to settle in before the threat of death loomed over them. And now, with no

time to lose, they were forced to flee—to run for their lives. Joseph, though weary and

afraid, could have easily given up. But he didn’t. He didn’t falter. Instead, he stood firmly

by Mary’s side. He embraced the role he had been given—not just as a husband, but as

the protector of the Messiah.

In the face of danger, he rose to the occasion, driven by his unwavering faith. He did

what was necessary to save Jesus’ life, putting his own fears aside for the sake of a

greater purpose.

It’s moments like these, when ordinary people are called to extraordinary actions, that

make the story of Jesus so powerful. Behind every moment of challenge and sacrifice,

there’s a story of faith and courage. And in the end, we see it clearly—God truly is the

best storyteller.

were Joseph and Mary. Share those discussions with the TJC team, we would love to

hear your stories.
